Century old player pianos rolls are dying. While their target player pianos can be repeatedly restored into perpetuity, the rolls cannot. It is important therefore that the content of these rolls be captured in computer form in hopes of extending their life into the foreseeable future. The process of scanning music rolls first generates a very large file, basically containing hundreds of thousands of pixels. That initial .CIS file can then converted into a .MID music file as a byproduct of the process. The files available here are the final relatively small .MID files which may be 'played' through most any computer's sound card, an electronic keyboard, or in solenoid equipped pianos such as Disklavier, PianoDisc, PianoMation, and Pianocorder. All are Midi Type 1 files, with identifying data imbeded within the 'info' area through the use of CakeWalk. As an aid for owners of such pianos who wish to use my midi files, Carol Beigel has assembled a very useful web site for this purpose:
- Midi File Player Free
- Midi Piano Software
- Midi Player Piano Software
- Modern Midi Player Piano
- Piano Only Midi Files

An 'S' says the roll is a standard non-reproducing music roll. An 'A' says the roll is an AMPICO reproducing piano roll. A 'D' says the roll is a Duo-Art reproducing piano roll. A 'W' says the roll is a Welte reproducing piano roll. An 'R' says the roll is a Recordo expression piano roll.
For use in pneumatic player pianos equipped with e-valve systems, such as the Gerety-Chase system, the user will need to have my original CIS files for conversion into e-roll type midi files. These files are available on request. As a number of people with e-valve pianos already have these files, it is hoped that they will communicate with one another and share the results of their conversions, in an effort to minimize duplication of effort.
Viewers are cautioned that the following midi files, emerging from my scanning process, are not the holy grail of 100% faithful reproductions of the original rolls. They are a very close approximation satisfying to my ear. I have preserved all the original raw scan data files if somebody should happen to want them for the asking.
I must presume that the viewer has access to an appropriate catalog to determine additional information for a particular music roll. You will note that some information about the roll is missing, as a consequence of a torn leader, missing box, obliterated leader data, or a combination of conditions. What you see is what I know about a certain roll, largely from the information contained within the roll and box labels.
In addition to the roll data displayed on these web pages, as much information as I know from the roll, its label and a 'net search are imbedded within the midi file 'Info' areas of the individual files. Some of my earlier roll scans have roll data imbedded within the tracks data. If the file is converted to midi type 0, this data will be lost.
All the files in this archive of preserved piano rolls in midi form, are enclosed within compressed .ZIP files. To extract these files from out of these ZIP files, you will require an UNZIP utility, which most computers now have.
In addition to a growing collection of midi files on my personal web site from new sources in addition to my own roll scanning efforts, other web sites are emerging containing a large number of turn-of-the-century piano roll scans, equally freely available. Those with scanners and making available midi files emerging from their efforts are:
Warren Trachtman , creator of the IAMMP (International Association of Mechanical Music Preservationists). Those midi files that are freely available from Warren's site are in 'bold' face. Right-Click on the tiny animated icon featuring a speaker, left-click on 'Save target as...', and save the midi file to a directory of your choice on your own computer. Enjoy! His roll scan midi files may be downloaded individually from: International Association of Mechanical Music Preservationists
Robert Perry , in New Zealand. His roll scan midi files may be downloaded individually from: pianola.co.nz Note: As at end of January 2006, I have rebuilt this archive. Of particular interest will be a complete renaming of the earlier midi files to reflect tune title ahead of its companion catalog number. The earlier batches had the catalog number prefixing the tune title, which made for difficulties for people outside the roll scanning community. All midi files now have the tune title ahead of the catalog number. All files here are all midi type 1. There are no e-roll files here. At some unknown time in the foreseeable future, I will revisit my original .cis scan files and create e-rolls.
